Associates from the Sheraton Denver Downtown’s Green Team recently planted an organic rooftop garden on the hotel’s 5th floor pool deck. The garden includes herbs and vegetables such as mint, tomatoes, cilantro, peppers and lavender, all used in the hotel’s culinary department as well in drinks served in the hotel’s 16 Mix Cocktail Lounge. The idea for the garden germinated from several hotel associates asked to “think green” to reduce the hotel’s environmental impact.
The pool deck garden is just the latest in the hotel’s list of sustainability achievements. The hotel recently received the Watts to Water Award from the Denver Metro Building Owners and Managers Association. Watts to Water is a program targeting reduction of energy and water consumption in metro Denver area office buildings and hotels of 5,000 square feet or more. The Sheraton was given the award for Greatest Improvement in Efficiency.
Additional highlights of the Sheraton’s Green initiatives include CFL bulbs in all rooms; occupancy sensors in all offices; digital thermostats in all guestrooms; recycling of all fluorescent light bulbs, batteries, wiring, telephones and electronic equipment; recycling of fryer and cooking oil; on-site water bottling program eliminating the use of plastic bottles and the use of only eco-friendly cleaning solutions and chemicals.
Earlier this year, Xcel Energy recognized the Sheraton Denver Downtown was awarded the Management Systems Achievement Award in recognition of new thermostats, all-new lighting in the parking garage, replacement of motors and light fixtures, replacement of all bulbs with high efficiency models and adding a new dish machine that saves 2,400 gallons of water daily compared to the old model.
In addition to the Xcel Energy award, the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel has achieved a 4 Green Key Rating through the Green Key Eco-Rating Program recognizing the hotel for national industry leadership and commitment to protecting the environment through its wide-ranging policies and practices.
